La Quatrième Pomme (The Fourth Apple) explores the history of a stone pedestal located at Place de Clichy in Paris. The pedestal was erected on June 4, 1899, for a statue of the socialist theorist and utopian Charles Fourier (1772–1837). During World War II it was melted down by the Vichy regime—a fate it shared with many other public monuments commemorating former resistance fighters and symbols of democratic values, as part of a campaign known as the “mobilisation of statues” (mobilisation des statues). The French public was told that the metal from the melted bronze statues would support local agriculture and industry. In reality, the material was sent to German refineries to be used in munitions production. On March 10, 1969, members of the Situationist International (S.I.) returned Charles Fourier in the form of a bronze-colored plaster replica. Twelve hours after its installation, the new Fourier was confiscated by the police.
